In Our Homeschool This Week...
Enrichments: Singing, Scriptures, David & Goliath, How we got the Book of Abraham, Jacob & Esau (birthrights), discussed how the United States is the "Promised Land", How the Scriptures are instructions for us and that the Spirit "quickeneth" all things, Reminded the kids of Great Grandma Edie's birthday and told stories of her :)
Science: Books on Volcanoes, Books and Videos on the Sun and Planets (and how we revolve around the sun), Aubrie looked up Dinosaur facts to write in her journal
History: Books and video on Christopher Columbus (for Columbus Day studies), The Trojan Horse, difference between BC and AD, the Chicago Fire of 1871,our Nation's Symbols and CNN Student News for current events
Math: "Bedtime Math", word problems, we learned about the "Human Calculator" and practiced his methods for mental math -- fascinating! Ben said that doing multiple digit addition this way was so much more fun and he loved it! Shortcut calculations when multiplying by 11
English/Writing: Novel Writing, Ben researched on how to make your Antagonist more relatable to the reader (and to give him trials in life so that there is a motive to why he does the things he does, etc) and also the difference between an Antagonist and a Villian, sight word practice, read alouds, independent reading, spelling rules, vowel blends, journal writing, opposites, handwriting, vocabulary
Music and Art: We learned all about the composer Handel and read a really neat book about his life. We then listened to many of his compositions - including one of his most famous: The Hallelujah Choir, Mosaic tiles pictures, sock puppets, lots and lots and LOTs of coloring, painting and crafting!
Other: Library Visit - while there, the kids also attended a "Cooking Magic" class. Aubrie and Lexi had a cooking challenge with each other... we've told them no more sweets - haha! They are going to have to learn how to made/create healthy dishes! Aubrie, Lexi and Nathan came up with a new club - THE MISTERIE KIDS (that's how they spelled it and I thought it was too cute!) and it is their job to help anyone who is feeling sad. They even made up their own theme song (again, too adorable!!) and then they made videos re-enacting scenarios that they could be of help with!
* This week during tuck-in, Nathan got very sad and said that he wished he didn't have Dyslexia and that he could read (he made this same comment multiple times this week to me) and so I decided to make him a book using the sight words that he's been learning! Nothing fancy, but he loved it and was so excited that he could read a "book"!
Spiritually Speaking...
Today was a very special day for our family... August received the Melchizedek Priesthood and was ordained to the office of an Elder by dad (Bishop Lund and Bro. Schneider from the Stake) also stood in). Some of the points made in his blessing:
* Heavenly Father is pleased with his desire to serve a mission
* Make daily scripture study a part of his daily routine
* There are many people around him (in the ward) that are ready and willing to help him on his journey

Written from August:
Well, mom wants me to write about getting getting the Melchizedek Priesthood. It was a good experience and I could feel the spirit pretty strong while getting it, and dad keeps saying he was stumbling on words because of the ruckus around us, but I really think it was more of him fighting back emotions because he isn't ready to be as old as he is. I find it ironic though, that I've been going to Elders Quorum for a while now, but now that I'm finally getting ordained an elder, I won't be able to go any more because of my new calling - a Primary teacher!
