Spiritually Speaking...
I had the opportunity to teach the Relief Society lesson at church this week. Since this year we will be studying the teachings of the Prophet, Howard W. Hunter, I decided to do a lesson to introduce the sisters to this great man! Truthfully, I learned quite a bit! He was only our Prophet for a short time (10 months) but he served as an Apostle for 35 years before that! I wanted to have a fun way to engage the ladies and so what I did was came up with a little game. I handed out 3x5 cards where "True" was written on one side and "False" on the other. I would then read statements and they would hold up their cards indicating if they thought what I had said was True or False. We would also discuss how we could apply things to our own lives. For example, (unbeknownst to me!) he was the victim of an attempted hostage situation at BYU in 1993. We discussed where his confidence came from to remain calm and stay true to the Lord. We then asked ourselves how we can do the same in the face of challenges that come our way. He is known for his emphasis on going to the Temple and so we spent time on that and how we can make goals for more Temple attendance this year. A few additional tidbits about him:
* He was very musical and started a band in high school called Hunters Croonaders. After high school he toured Asia with his band and played on the ships
* His dad got baptized when Pres. Hunter was 19. 27 years later (on Pres. Hunters 46th Birthday) his parents surprised him at the Temple and they were sealed as a Forever Family :)
* He had 3 sons (his first boy died at the age of 6 months)
* He was a Bishop at age 32 and a Stake President at 38
* He was born and raised in Boise, Idaho
Anyway, it went really well and several sisters came up to me afterwards to tell me how much they enjoyed the lesson. I'm excited to learn and grow this year while studying his testimony of the gospel!
