In Our Family This Week:
* Completed our 3rd week of Schooling for the new school year! In science we did a week long study of our cells and we all really were amazed with how awesome our cells are and how Heavenly Father created us so perfectly!
* On Monday, mom and dad were going to go play some racquetball together and so they needed to put Maggie in her kennel (as everyone else was gone)... so dad went to go get her from underneath the girls' bed. She had other plans and didn't want to come out! So she wriggled out of her collar and slid further under the bed. John then bent down to pull her out by her scruff and with the weird angle he was at and the force of him pulling her, he heard a "POP" immediately followed by a burning and sharp pain in his hamstring! We hobbled him to the bed and began to ice and elevate his leg. After getting it checked out at the VA, it was confirmed that he did indeed tear his hamstring muscle but would not need surgery to repair it (yay!) and has been hobbling around on crutches all week.
* It was our Ward Campout this weekend at Hot Springs Campground in Garden Valley. Since John can't bend over or walk without a cane/crutches we decided it would be best to just head up super early (like 5:30am) on Saturday for dad to be able to help with cooking the breakfast. We arrived just after 7am and visited with the ward members as they woke up. The girls came with us and the other teen girls were super happy to see them - they ended up playing card games and going to the river together. On the way home, we stopped by Grandma and Grandpa's farm and visited for a bit.
* Ben has written in his book (a stand alone book he's been working on while waiting for Amnesty to get back in with the Editor) everyday this week. He spends a minimum of about 4 hours (sometimes up to 7-8 hours) a day! It's great to see him working on his passion again!
* The girls had a babysitting gig this week and also hung out with Lauren. Nathan worked his normal Thursday - Saturday shifts at Marco.
*We watched the Olympics (held in Tokyo) these past 2 weeks... our family has particularly liked watching the diving, swimming, gymnastics and Rugby. In fact, dad, Aubrie, Lexi and Nathan got up several times in the middle of the night to watch the Rugby matches Live! Now that's dedication! haha
* Seth has spent a few evening this week painting miniature figures for his D&D Campaigns. He got into painting these characters at the end of last year and he really enjoys the creative outlet. It takes patience, precision and a steady hand!
* August 1st is Swiss National Day! We decided to attend the Swiss picnic and celebrate with the other people of swiss heritage here in the Treasure Valley. It was held at a park in downtown Boise and 50+ people attended. It was potluck and so many different Swiss dishes were served. Dad made his delicious Zopft bread, Aubrie baked red velvet cupcakes and decorated them with red and white swirled frosting and topped them off with miniature Swiss flags. Lexi made a traditional Engadiner Nusstorte (Walnut Pie) which turned out so yummy! We also brought some corn on the cob and a cooler full of water. We talked Grandma and Grandpa Vogt into attending with us (they hadn't been for over 20 years!) and they ended up really enjoying themselves and seeing some old friends.
Spiritually Speaking
* Nathan got released as the Teacher's Quorum Secretary and put in as the 1st Counselor in the Teacher's Quorum Presidency. He was set apart after church by Brother Ryan Aten (1st Counselor in the Bishopric). Here are some things that were said in his blessing:
- This calling is evidence that Heavenly Father know him
- He has specific talents and abilities that will help in fulfiling his calling and teaching the Quorum lessons
- Pray for the members of the Quorum by name
- Use this time to develop a stronger relationship with Heavenly Father and pray daily
* I asked Ben if he'd seen the Lords hand in his life this week and he quickly replied 'YES! My whole health journey has been a blessing from the Lord! I went in to quit the gym and instead was inspired to get a personal trainer and now 3.5 months later, I'm down 55 pounds!"
* I've been preparing a talk (I'll be speaking next week in Sacrament) and so I've been re-reading several of my old Scripture Journals (and I have loved it!!) I came across where I had written down a brainstorm of questions I could ask when opening up my scripture study. I really wanted to remember them so thought I'd write them down here (and a bonus if it inspires anyone else!)
- How do I (or what do I need) to do to prepare my heart to receive what the Lord has ready to pour in?
- How does Heavenly Father Speak to me?
- Please let a scripture stand out that I can apply to my life
- How can I be more in tune with the Spirit so I can ___________
- What was I trained in in the pre-existance?
- What doctrine or principle should I teach to the kids?
- What doctrine or principle, if understood, would cause someone to desire constant companionship with the Holy Ghost and never want to do something to drive it away?
- What must I learn first before I can understand higher and deeper spiritual truths?
* After dad tore his hamstring muscle on Monday, he called August and Seth to give him a Priesthood blessing. August anointed and Seth administered the blessing. One thing we all found interesting is that it was stated that dad would "walk sooner than expected..." - once mom heard that, she felt very relieved! And that has been come true this week! Dad is able to walk short distances unassisted! He's not overdoing it and still rests a lot but we're excited about his progress! He has even "upgraded" to only using 1 crutch (vs 2) or sometimes even just a cane. We know that the Lord has been instrumental in his recovery!
