In Our Homeschool This Week...

* Almost finished with our read aloud - Treasure Island
* Started listening to The Wizard of Oz on the long car rides to football practice
* Math games, Science podcasts, Science books, word searches, memorization, reading, arts and crafts and baking filled up our time!
Seth Spotlight...
* Still plugging along with all of the Spanish lessons
* Made a "wall of cereal" as a prank on one of the other residence rooms
* Had his favorite day so far... (excerpt from his letter home) "Yesterday was probably most of our favorite day so far. So we taught the 3 TRC people I mentioned earlier, and I felt those went really well. But the reason it was so good was because of the devotional later that night, and then our district meeting about it. The devotional was by Elder Schwitzer of the 70 ( In charge of missionary health department) and he talked about commandments. It was a really good talk, like he mentioned how the 10 commandments are in 3 categories, and by severity. They have to do with our relationships with certain people. 1-4 is our relationship to God. 5 is to our parents. and 6-10 are relationship with others. And in severity. Just like Murder 6 is more severe than lying 9. Though in the district meeting. (and for those who don't know. The district is made up of around 12 people, all in the same area or in our case all learning spanish. We have one set of sisters, and 5 sets of Elders.) But in it we discussed the talk, and then went on and discussed about so many other things. Near the end while we were all discussing, Our District Leader (he is going to serve in Ecuador) went around and said what each of us needed to hear. We only had 9 out of our 12 people because some had to go to choir. But it was the most touched this group of 9 men that are only 18 and 19 year olds felt. A few of us were in tears. And I felt close to it too. It really made me feel good how he talked about me for a bit to everyone and said that I was an inspiration to him because even though I don't get the language the best, I don't give up and keep trying. And how he doesn't want to give up, and he doesn't want me to ever give up."
Spiritually Speaking...
Hip Hip Hooray for Conference Day!!!!
We were able to partake and feast upon the words of the Brethren this weekend! It was uplifting, rejuvenating, encouraging and inspiring! Mom asked each of the family members what they liked best and here is what they said:
Dad: For me the best part of Conference was being Spiritually recharged. There were no big "A ha" moments for me because the principles taught were nothing new. However, I feel re-invigorated with attending to my duties and not taking my membership in this church and the gospel knowledge that I have for granted. We are truly blessed to have this gospel restored here upon the earth. We are truly blessed to have a living prophet who speaks for the Lord and tells us what we need to hear.
Ben: I guess the part that was cool for me was hearing how righteous people can always be happy - even in the middle of hard times. We can always look for the good in the world.
Nathan: My favorite part were the jokes and funny stories - especially the story about how Elder Renlund set off a firecracker in church when he was 12!
Aubrie: The think that I loved most was that we all got to be together as a family for the weekend and got to feel the Spirit together. Plus, I really liked being able to hear the prophet speak!
Lexi: My favorite part of conference was listening to the prophet and being together as a family... and that we didn't fight.
August: My favorite talk during conference was by Evan A. Shmutz about "Why Bad Things happen to Good People" and how I'll be able to share some of the words with Cami (as she and her family have been going through a tragedy with her sister, Hannah almost dying).
Mom: Where to start!? I think I have about 8 pages of notes! I particularly enjoyed all of Saturday afternoons session - especially listening to the MTC Choir perform! The anthems they sang were so fitting for their Missionary service and they all were radiating! I loved how Elder Yamashita talked about being "Ambitious for Christ!". On Sunday morning, I really enjoyed Russell M. Nelson's talk about JOY and how Christ is the source of all JOY!
Also, mom and dad decided to recommit our efforts for Family Prayer, Family Scripture Study, Family Dinner and Weekly FHE (we're fairly decent now, but know that we can be better!). We thought back to a time in our life when we were very diligent in doing all of these things and it was back when our Bishop challenged us to do all of these things and had a chart made up to track our progress. Soooooo... mom designed up a new chart for us to keep us accountable on these things (that would also look cute being displayed!). Below is what will be printed up and the kids will color in the circles each day that we complete the tasks (the 4th circle every 7th day is for our FHE).
